Op.41 - Poem

Totally introspective, meditative, and with an improvised nonchalance. The constant longing and main theme are very reminiscent of the Sonata No.4 Op.30 (Pieces from Op.30 to Op.42 were all written in a close period of time and naturally share stylistic similarities).
In ABA’ form, the A part exposes a languid theme under colors of extended dominant chords (foreshadowing the Mystic chord), while the B part is more romantic, with a very lyrical melody over descending chromatic basses. The recapitulation presents the same theme with a grand enhancement of the accompaniment, full of mysterious arabesques.
