Op.46 - Scherzo

Scherzo, Otto Friedrich (1913)
Scherzo, Otto Friedrich (1913)

Composed more than twenty years after the Two Scherzos WoO 4, 5 from his youth. Similarly to the Poème Satanique Op.36, it mixes lyricism with grotesque and irony.

Despite the harshness of the harmonies and the seemingly chaotic flow, the work is fully tonal and end in a calm C major triad. The rhythm of the left hand constantly disturb the fluidity of the harmonic progression in the right hand : This mismatch of both hands create the playful, “scherzo-ish” aspect of the work.
