Op.57 - 2 Pieces

Two Women Embracing, Egon Schiele (1913)
Two Women Embracing, Egon Schiele (1913)

Two sensual pieces:

No.1 – Desir
No.2 – Caresse Dansée

This set is one of the rare examples of eroticism in classical music. The first piece unfolds as a sea of Tristan chords — French augmented sixths voiced in fourths, famously designated as the désir motif in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. This very harmony will later serve as the foundation for Scriabin’s own mystic chord, which becomes fully realized in his symphonic poem Prométhée, Op.60.

The second piece is filled with refinement, sensual arabesques, and a profound sense of yearning — a subtle interplay of elegance and desire.
