Op.1 - Waltz in F minor

“Waltz at the Bal Mabille” by Philippe Jacques Linder
“Waltz at the Bal Mabille” by Philippe Jacques Linder

First published piece by Scriabin written at the age of 14. Despite the title, it surprisingly ends in major due to a augmented chord transition (F augmented resolving to F major instead of Bb minor). As with the romantic composers (Schumann, Liszt…), the ambiguity between major and minor shift remains constant in Scriabin’s early works.

The music is in direct line with Chopin’s waltzes, which is symbolically even more emphasized by the fact that Chopin’s very last piece ended in F minor (Makurka No.4 Op.68), positioning Scriabin as his direct successor. The music is romantic, eloquent and infused with pathos.
