Op.16 - 5 Preludes

Short preludes were a field of experimentation for Scriabin, slowly allowing his harmonic ideas to evolve.
Short preludes were a field of experimentation for Scriabin, slowly allowing his harmonic ideas to evolve.

Set of preludes organized in five pieces:

No.1 : Andante (B major)
No.2 : Allegro (G♯ minor)
No.3 : Andante cantabile (G♭ major)
No.4 : Lento (E♭ minor)
No.5 : Allegretto (F♯ major)

The set opens with an almost impressionistic piece, full or lunar colours reminiscent of Debussy’s and Satie’s early colours. It is also foreshadows Scriabin’s own Sonata no.2, with its resonant and luminous harmonies.

The second prelude features an almost folksy melody, echoing to some of Grieg’s piano pieces.

The fourth piece is composed with rare bareness, with little to no accompaniment. This minimalist aspect will reappear in Scriabin’s last preludes Op.74.
