Op.56 - 4 Pieces

Four seasons, Walter Crane (1905)
Four seasons, Walter Crane (1905)

The last set of four pieces in Scriabin’s oeuvre, presented as four contrasting miniatures:

No.1 : Prelude in Eb major
No.2 : Ironies in C major
No.3 : Nuances
No.4 : Etude

The first piece is full of bitter harmonies, opening with a chord composed of a tritone and a diminished ninth (the two most dissonant intervals).Yet, despite its brutal opening, it quietly resolves into a serene major tonality, as if light emerges from within the dissonance.

The second is a playful, dry miniature, its humor and irony recalling the wit of Debussy.

The third is perhaps the most introspective — post-Chopinesque in its refinement, with luminous chords delicately floating above a subtle, flowing left-hand line.

The final piece boldly mocks the genre of the overwrought etude by compressing its essence into a mere 25 seconds!
