WoO 12, 13 : Two fugues (F minor)

Two four voices fugues, based on the same melody, explored through distinct patterns and similar tonality. Composed at the age of 16, they are likely connected to Scriabin’s arrival at the Moscow Conservatory, possibly written as an exercise for his composition teacher: Sergueï Taneïev.
Interestingly, the subject starts with a major seventh, creating a mighty dissonant and ambiguous atmosphere. Decades later, in his musical maturity, the composer would compose an etude entirely built around the same interval (No.2 Op.65).
