WoO 2 - 2 Romance F♯ major

Natalya Sekerina, Scriabin’s first muse.
Natalya Sekerina, Scriabin’s first muse.

Scriabin’s only known attempt at a solo voice composition. Other vocal works in Scriabin’s output include the WoO 10 duett, and choral parts in his orchestral compositions. The key of F# major would remain his favorite - always associated with intense lyricism and rich colors, which he later described as “the key to all the mysteries of universe”. Major works such as Sonata No.4 and No.5 are set in this particular key, a true laboratory for his harmonic innovations.

The text is dedicated to Natalya Sekerina, with whom Scriabin fell in love between 1892 and 1895, until she rejected his proposal under parental pressure. She is considered Scriabin’s first muse.

The lyrics were written by Scriabin himself, who in addition to being a composer, was a also a poet. He continued to express his thoughts throughout his life. The poem depicts a total devotion to the beloved one:

(Translated from Russian)

I wish I had a beautiful dream To live in your soul for a moment I Wish I were in a passionate rush Calm down The Great Thought Spins the head And the whole world rejoices in You, my angel !
