WoO 4, 5 - Two Scherzos (Eb major, Ab Major)

Scherzos are meant as playful pieces : repetitions, intense contrasts and animated virtuosity.
Scherzos are meant as playful pieces : repetitions, intense contrasts and animated virtuosity.

The lively colors of playfulness between short bursts of energy in these two works (Woo 5 - Scherzo in Eb major, Woo 6 - Scherzo in Ab Major) are reminiscent of Beethoven.

Alongside a Scherzo in F major for orchestra, of which only a fragment has survived, these represent Scriabin’s only youthful attempts at the Scherzo genre. He would later return to this form in Scherzo Op.46, with far more irony and bitterness.

The first is somewhat more contrasted, while the second is more lyrical - and could also be called a “minuet”.
