WoO 6 - Sonata-fantaisie in G♯ minor

This Sonata, in direct link to the romantic tradition from which Scriabin emerges, possesses a very melancholic feel to it.
This Sonata, in direct link to the romantic tradition from which Scriabin emerges, possesses a very melancholic feel to it.

Scriabin’s first known sonata, written at the age of 14 for his first sweetheart Natalya Sekerina, to whom he also dedicated the Romance WoO 2.

The “Sonata-Fantaisie” form is inherited from Beethoven (Sonata No.13 Op.27) and Liszt (Sonata S.178, Dante Sonata), two masters of pianistic craft from whom Scriabin certainly drew inspiration in a period when the piano sonata form was being radically reinvented. The middle section is reminiscent of the “mazurka” style with slavic-like melodies. Composed in a single movement, the piece reflects his youth, with modest development.

Scriabin would later return to this form in his Second Piano Sonata Op.19. The pronounced chromaticism already hints at the direction of his later works.
